Unearthing a Territory icon: NT searches for its first mineral emblem

The Northern Territory will choose its first mineral emblem to recognise the importance of the mining industry to our economy.

Mining and minerals represent a major contribution to the Territory’s economy and have helped shape our history.

An official mineral emblem will recognise the Territory’s rich geology, its longstanding connection with mining and its position as a leading resources jurisdiction. It will also complement the Territory’s existing floral and animal emblems, including the Sturt’s desert rose, red kangaroo and wedge-tailed eagle.

About the mineral emblem

An official emblem is a recognised symbol representing an important part of the Territory’s identity, environment, history or character.

For this initiative, the NT Government will establish a process for selecting the mineral, which will become the emblem.

Mineral selection process

The NT Government will lead the process, supported by scientific, education, community and industry input.

Territorians will be invited to consider a curated selection of minerals found in the NT and help to select the one which will best represent the Territory.

This is an opportunity for all Territorians to engage on the different mineral resources found across the Territory, and explore:

• what they look like
• where they are found in the NT
• their everyday uses
• their connections to Territory history
• the opportunities they could represent for our future.

An expert panel will consider the public responses and recommend finalists before undertaking a formal process to select the NT’s first mineral emblem.
